Pokémon

Pokémon is a media franchise created by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori, which revolves around fictional creatures called “Pokémon” that humans, known as Pokémon Trainers, catch and train to battle each other for sport. The name “Pokémon” is derived from the English words “Pocket” and “Monsters,” reflecting the concept of creatures that can be stored in small devices, known as Poké Balls.

The franchise began with video games released by Nintendo in 1996 and has since expanded to include trading card games, animated television series, movies, toys, and more. Pokémon is primarily centered on the idea of collecting and training different species of Pokémon, each with unique abilities and characteristics. Trainers aim to become Pokémon Champions by defeating other trainers and Gym Leaders, while also seeking to complete the Pokédex, an in-game encyclopedia of Pokémon species. Pokémon has become one of the highest-grossing media franchises in the world and has a massive global fan base, making it a significant cultural phenomenon in both gaming and entertainment.
